Looking to decorate your home in style? Well, etched window glass summons a limitless number of ideas. There are so many possibilities and designs you can make from it. With the right supplies for glass etching, you can even choose to decorate them yourselves.

Etched Glass Block For a Window Wall Or Gift – The Possibilities Are Endless

Why have a generic glass block project when you can have a one of kind design? Many people know that block come in wavy designs and can be used for a window, shower, or wall, but they don’t realize you can customize your blocks with unique images and patterns to have a personalized look at an affordable price.

With the use of a sealed beam laser process intricate details, designs, and patterns can be etched into the glass surface to turn an ordinary project into something special. This process can be used to create a structural window or wall, directional sign or even a personalized glass gift. Learn 5 steps on how to take advantage of the laser etching option.

Step 1 – Determine where you want to use the etched glass block – What’s unique about etched blocks is their ability to be used as a structural building element for a window, wall, or as a gift or award for a friend, neighbor, or team.

To create an etched glass block window think through where the product will be used. The most popular uses include basement, bathroom and kitchen windows. Most finished basement windows put the etched glass design on the inside so it can be enjoyed while watching television in a man den or recreation room. Some of the images chosen have been replicas of sporting interests, teams, hobbies, pets and floral patterns. Bathroom windows can add a nice interior design touch by either mirroring or contrasting the surrounding style of the room. A popular use in kitchens is to play off either the architectural theme of the room (for example a Traditional, Tuscan, or Contemporary design) or to go with a fruit or vegetable theme into the blocks.

An etched glass block wall can be an exciting place to put an entire mural over a grouping of blocks or spot in individual blocks. For mural applications it is preferable to use smaller joints between the blocks so the design in the image appears as one. Walls are popular for waiting rooms and lobbies to include a corporate logo and to move light through the interior of the office or in partition or shower walls for a private residence.

Laser etching a bank, vase or solid block also makes a unique gift. Popular uses include weddings, anniversaries, baby showers and for awards. Any combination of text and image can be included in the blocks with either custom or stock designs. The vases make nice centerpieces for events, and the banks make excellent gifts for kids.

Step 2 – Do you want a custom image or standard pattern – For personalized gifts, awards, logos, or wall murals the custom image is the obvious choice. In many cases though a stock image will capture the look and not require an image from a customer. In the stock series there is a Contemporary Group of patterns with designs called Hypnotic, Frank Lloyd Wright, Psychedelic, and Pentagon. An entire Floral Series and Traditional Series is a nice fit with more conservative decorating. The Earth Series has patterns with sunbursts, raindrops, butterfly leaves, and pavers for either outdoor or indoor applications. If you’re a sports or pet lover there is several choices to choose from in the Hobby and Pet Lovers Series.

Step 3 – For a glass block window or wall should you use a single or multiple block pattern? Since block murals are laser etched together as one assembly (so the design continues from one block to another) it is best to have the joints between the blocks closer together for window or wall applications. With this fact in mind it’s important to consider the material that will be used to join the blocks in conjunction with the choice of whether a single block or multiple block etched design will make the most sense. With the single blocks you can create a stripe through the wall, a checker board pattern of blocks, or just randomly insert the etched designs in the window wall.

Step 4 – Consider using color glass block or dichroic glass units – For additional style consider adding color or mirrored finished dichroic glass to a window, wall or shower design. Colors for the blocks are virtually endless and even the ends, corners, and angle blocks can have etching and coloring combined. Dichroic glass appears like a reflective mirror finish on the blocks and the light is both reflected back and transmitted through the block. When you change your viewing angle on the dichroic units the colors actually appear to change.

Step 5 – Determine the best method to install the window, wall, shower or directional sign- There are several methods used for glass block installations. Probably the hardest way to install is block by block since it requires the highest skills level and takes the most time. A more common installation method now is with the use of prefabricated glass block panels. Pre-made wall or window sections can be constructed with or without vinyl integral spacers between the blocks. The vinyl stack spacing system provides increased wall rigidity and permits the use an anchor to tie the panel to a surrounding wall(s). Vinyl frames can also be used with the windows to provide a nailing flange (or fin) which makes the block installation much easier in framed openings. Consult a glass block specialty fabricator for the best method to use for your particular project.

Now that you’re equipped with these 5 steps you’re ready to design your own etched glass block window, wall, shower or gift.

Have you ever seen a hibiscus etched glass bowl? I could say that it is one of the finest examples of the beauty that is in etching glass. It’s really easy to etch glass as long as you have supplies for glass etching. Learn more about it below.

Etched Glass: Etching Beauty

Etched glass is a wonderful gift to give those that you love. The method of actually etching the glass can be done by you or by a professional. No matter who does it, by digging into the first layer of the glass, a shine and detail can be added to the glass, transforming it from a simple gift into something truly beautiful. But, why should you add etched glass to your list of things to purchase and give? There are actually several ways that this type of method can dress up your gifts and create a very unique and special look.

Etching can be done on many types of glass and other materials. For example, if you want to dress up the look of a mirror, you can etch the glass in a pattern. In a circle framed mirror, etch an intertwining vine long the edge of the frame, leaving the center completely open for viewing. It adds texture and depth to the look so that you get a more interesting piece to hand on your wall.

Etched glass can also be an ideal way to add element to your framed pictures. You can use etching to dedicate a picture or message. Or, you can use etching as a way to communicate with others the date and time of what happens in the photo. You can etch a poem onto the glass that is only visible if you really look for it. These things can help to transform an average piece of glass and an average frame into a meaningful, beautiful sentiment to the memory being depicted.

You can find professionals that sell ready made etched glass products. You can also find a number of different products on the market to purchase to help you to create your own etching. Whatever you do, find a way to create a beautiful image with the help of etching. You will adore all that it can provide to you.

Making Your Own Etched Shot Glasses

Etching glass is a gorgeous and simple technique that uses certain chemicals or sand abrasions to roughen a piece of glass and make it appear frosted and opaque. Believe it or not, this technique can be done on your own and you can use it to transform plain shot glasses into a beautiful and personal etched shot glasses for birthday or wedding favors. Though etching glass is pretty simple, proper care and safety is still needed and you must follow the instructions carefully. Two common ways of etching glass is by sand abrasion and chemical etching. Sand abrasion uses special equipment to fire small particles of sand at a piece of glass to chip away at the surface–most people consider this way to be the real etching procedure as this technique allows for shading and sculpting of the glass piece. Chemical etching, on the other hand, relies on store-bought creams to eat away at the surface of the glass, producing a uniformly frosted appearance where applied. The latter technique is far simpler, cheaper and more readily available for the home crafter.

Bored with the usual glassware? Why not make your own etched glassware through glass etching templates. You can start with your shot glasses.

For creating etched shot glasses, first you need to get a supply of sturdy shot glasses. Get more than you need in order to be able to practice and refine your techniques first. You will also need etching chemicals which you can purchase from your local craft store. These chemicals depend on how many glasses you want to make, and it is better to get a more expensive but reusable product rather than a cheaper, single-use brand. Etching kits are also available that include stencils for lettering and designs. Kits also come with protective gear such as rubber gloves and eye wear and the relevant tools so if you don’t get a kit, get these gears separately. Also, practice safety at all times even if you are a professional in this area.

When you are ready to etch your shot glasses, fix the stencils to the glass firmly and at the place you want them on. Make your own shapes or be creative: self-adhesive holes reinforcements make good polka dots and other children’s shape stickers can be used for their silhouettes. The area that is covered will remain the clear part whereas the ones that aren’t covered are the parts that will be etched so plan your designs properly.

Next, put on your protective eye wear and gloves as it can protect you from the etching chemicals that are very toxic. Follow the directions on the package and make sure to apply an even layer of the chemical to avoid a streaky or uneven final product. Leave the chemical on the glass for the required period of time and for this, it is best to set the timer. After the time is up, it’s time to rinse. When rinsing, make sure to remove the entire chemicals from the glass and your gloves before drying the glass and removing the stencil. If you are a beginner at etching, start your etched shot glasses craft with large shapes and designs because it is usually easier than words or intricate and delicate designs.

Have you ever seen a glass compote with etched bird? Do you want to start creating glass etched works of art? Well, you can certainly start a hobby or even a business of etching glass. Here are some information on glass supplies for etching to help you start this as a business or hobby.

Glass Etching Supplies For Starting a Business Or Hobby

Starting a Glass Etching Business for corporate awards or personalized items

I often tell people if you are interested in etching glass for a business, it’s always best to have quality supplies and equipment that will cost a lot but last for long times. But if you’re just starting up a business, you can get very inexpensive professional equipment which is usually adequate for hobbyist and part time artists. This relieves the risk of spending a lot of money for an etching business and end up becoming a poor return on investment.

Buying Inexpensive Etching Equipment

It’s a conservative approach, but why not spend a few hundred dollars on decent glass etching equipment to test the market and build a demanding customer base before spending thousands of dollars. Because think about it, you could live in an area where there is no demand of glass etching work and you have spent thousands of dollars on equipment that doesn’t make you any money.

Glass etching supply companies over emphasize the profitability of doing this line of work. Other etching gurus suggest that it really isn’t that great, but I think it depends on where you live personally. A high class area may be a better fit neighborhood but it also depends on what type of etching work your doing such as acrylic awards or glass awards for corporate awards, glass art, or home decoration and gifts.

After purchasing less expensive supplies and there seems to be a demand for your work, you can later decide if you want to upgrade to expensive equipment. It’s all about return on investment as with all business practices. You may even find out that the previously purchased inexpensive equipment is good enough for your work anyway.

So have it your way, you can risk investing on expensive equipment from glass etching supply companies from the get go or spend a fraction of the cost on adequate systems and test the market before heavily emptying your pockets.

Got an antique glass door and want a new look? Why not transform them into antique etched glass door? The beauty of antiques can really add contrast and improve the mood of the room.

Etched Glass Doors For Interior Beauty

Are you looking for wonderful glass doors for your home or office? In the past, it’s always been sturdy, heavy wooden doors that have gotten all the attention; the heavier and more elaborate the wood, the fancier your house was considered to be.

But that has changed as the modern day has dawned, and simplicity and elegance were valued over old-fashioned fanciness. Now, glass doors are more popular than ever, because of their contemporary sophistication and their ability to allow light in everywhere to give a much more open, warmer feel to the atmosphere of a room, house, store, or office.

One type of glass door in particular is the etched glass door, and these etched glass doors are essentially designs created by frosting glass. Frosted glass results in a translucent glass window, which is nice because it allows more privacy without blocking the light.

Translucent frosted glass can be used for showers and office doors-or, if you want to be a bit fancier, you can put designs on the frosted glass and make it into a glass etching, which is truly beautiful and complex.

Glass etchings are usually created by sandblasting glass in several different stages in order to create different depths of translucency if you want a more three dimensional picture (it’s somewhat like shading in a drawing, and the results are very beautiful).

Popularly, etched glass is usually made up of a semi-translucent picture with a clear background. This gives the glass a nice, elegant look while still maintaining transparency and allowing plenty of light through.

The alternative is to use an etched piece of glass with a frosted background, though It’s recommended if your frosted background is significantly lighter than the actual etching to make the contrast more apparent.

If you have a garden, then consider using etched glass doors as the door to your garden; it will lend both an old-fashioned and modernistic style to your beautiful garden.

The actual process of etching glass is a little more complicated. There are several modern ways of frosting the glass in that way; there’s sandblasting, which is slightly less accurate, and also etching via the Leptat acid process.

The sandblasted frosted glass gives a more abrasive look, while the Leptat acid process creates a crystalline surface with much texture that is deeply etched. The Leptat acid process originated in a Czechoslovakian glass exhibit that was at the World’s Fair in Osaka, Japan.

The Leptat etching process is often considered the more expensive and more elegant of the two, because instead of simply creating a rough sheen over the glass, the Leptat acid process creates a beautiful reflective surface that is etched and carved as if it were an intricate gem, and light reflects off the Leptat etched glass from many different angles.

If you’d like, you can create your own glass etching designs using etching cream, though these may not be as beautiful as etchings through the Leptat etching process. However, homemade glass etching can be fun and is safe as long as you take precautions not to allow the glass to cut your hands.

Particularly, if you only have seen a glass etched antique door, you’d be astonished… Read the article below to find out more decorative ideas.

Creative Decorating Ideas Using Old Windows

A Room With A View

Have you ever wished you had a great view right outside your bedroom window but all you see when you wake up in the morning is the wall of the next-door neighbor’s house? Well then follow these easy steps to create your own window with a great view.

What You Will Need for This Decorating Project:

1.An old window preferably with the glass still intact. You can find these at flea markets or salvage yards.

2.Poster or picture with a pretty view large enough to put behind the window.

3.2 mug hooks

4.1 nail

5.Wire

6.10 thumbtacks

7.Hammer

If you want to paint the window, do this before moving on to the first step. You should consider though that sometimes the weathered, antique look adds a lot of charm.

How to Get This Look:

- Put the window on the floor and put the poster or picture on it so that the front is facing down.

- Use the thumbtacks to attach the picture or poster to the window.

- Make sure the picture is right side up.

- Lean the window against the wall so that you are looking at the back.

- Put the 2 mug hooks on the back of your window in the top corners.

- Make sure the opening for the mug hooks is facing down.

- Use the wire to create a "hanger" for the window. Secure the two ends of the wire on the mug hooks. Make sure there is a lot of excess wire so that when you hang the window the wire creates a triangle with 4-inch sides.

- Hammer the nail into the wall where you want your window.

- You can now add window treatments to it just as you would a normal window or wrap silk flower garlands around the wire.

Old windows can be used in a variety of ways. Here are just a few more creative ideas for the old window and a plain wall.

Decoupage pressed flowers on the different panes of glass. Try using whole flowers or just petals for an interesting country garden look.

Decoupage postcards from around the world into the panes or pictures of a favorite city, like Paris.

Paint the frame to match your child’s room. Attach clothespins (also painted in a coordinated color) all around the outside of the window. As you child grows attach school pictures to the panes and let them use the clothespins to showcase their drawings, report cards and other mementos. When the child graduates you have a ready-made decoration.

Make etched glass designs in the panes or make faux stained glass out of the windowpanes. Your local craft store should have everything you need to do this, from instructions to materials.

Use the window to create a fun decorative piece in the kitchen. Get a shelf the same width as the window and paint it the same color. Put the shelf on the wall just above the window so they look like one piece. Put mug hooks evenly spaced along the bottom of the window frame and use them to hold cute mugs, wire whisks, ladles, potholders or other items. Put recipe books along with a few decorative items that match your kitchen on the shelf, such as a vase of flowers, decorative plates or a nice clock.

Auto door glass buffing or etching is quite common nowadays. There are so many cool designs that highlight your car. Not only that, glass etching or buffing on cars help prevent auto theft too..

Top 10 Ways to Prevent Auto Theft

Every 27 seconds, another vehicle is stolen. More than 1 million motor vehicles will be stolen this year. Is it just a matter of time before you become a victim of auto theft? Not necessarily, if you follow these 10 auto theft prevention tips:

1. Install an antitheft device
2. Never leave your car running or leave the keys in the ignition when it is unattended
3. Keep your car door locked at all times
4. If you have a garage, park your car inside and lock the garage door
5. Don’t store packages or valuables in plain sight
6. Park your car in a safe, well-lit, or well-traveled area at night
7. Have your vehicle identification number (VIN) etched into the windows and major parts of your car to make your car harder to resell on the black market
8. When you park on the street, turn your wheels toward the curb, use the emergency brake, and try to park between other cars (this will make it harder for a thief to tow it)
9. Avoid parking your car in a long-term parking lot
10. Take out any removable electronic devices (e.g. CD player) when you leave your car

Antitheft devices:
Although common sense tactics such as locking your car or leaving it in a well-lit area can certainly prevent auto theft, you may want to buy some peace of mind by purchasing an antitheft device. Many types are available, so it’s easy to find one that fits your budget and your needs. Some of the more common antitheft devices include:

Car alarms
Steering wheel locks
Immobilizers
Glass sensors
Ignition-kill switches
Fuel-kill switches
Radio receivers/transmitters

Whatever type of antitheft device you choose, you’ll want to make sure that it is installed properly. Otherwise, you may risk damaging the device or even your car’s electrical system. It may be wise to enlist the services of an alarm installation professional to do the work for you.

Auto insurance discounts:

The comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy covers theft. And since insurance premiums are based, in part, on a car’s likelihood of being stolen, cars that have a high theft rate usually cost more to insure.

Fortunately, in addition to making your car less attractive to thieves, antitheft devices can also help you to save money on your auto insurance. Currently, 12 states require insurance companies to give discounts to car owners who install antitheft devices. However, even if you live in a state where antitheft discounts aren’t required, your insurer will probably offer them anyway. Typically, insurer discounts are higher for automatic antitheft devices (e.g. passive-setting alarms).

But if your car is stolen…Contact the police first, and give them the following information:

Year, make, model, and color of your car

Your license plate number

VIN

Approximate time when the car was stolen

Location where the car was parked

Names of eye witnesses, if any

Next, inform your auto insurance company that your car was stolen. Be sure to have your policy identification number on hand. Although the claim process varies depending on the state in which you live, insurance companies usually have up to 30 days to settle a stolen vehicle claim.

There are so many amazing designs for glass etching nowadays. Well, you can even choose to etch glass yourself as long as you have glass etching patterns. But before getting your supplies for glass etching, you should know the characteristics of certain materials to improve your technique.

Characteristics of Laser Engraving Materials

Laser engravers are used to created detailed designs in the surface of nearly any material. These images have extremely high resolution and can have very fine features. One of the fastest growing uses has been to create keepsakes by engraving photographs onto durable surfaces like stone tiles.

For all of the versatility of the laser, different materials react in different ways to the engraving process.

Wood and Paper

One of the first uses of laser engravers was to burn designs into wooden surfaces. The wood burns easily so can be engraved by low-wattage lasers. Hardwoods such as oak or mahogany work best. Softer woods can produce inconsistent etching depths and have been known to actually ignite during the etching. Use of the lowest wattage lasers is recommended for these projects.

Fiberboard and hard paper work very well with laser engraving. Linty papers and newsprint tend to respond like soft woods.

Plastics

Acrylic is one of the most common plastics used with laser engravers. It holds the etch well and produces a breathtaking finished piece. Other successful plastics include Bakelite and similar hard plastics.

Softer plastics, such as styrene, tend to melt around the engraving producing a softer or even deformed look. This might be acceptable or even desired depending on the purpose of the engraving.

Special plastics have been developed specifically for laser engraving. These may include silicates to help keep the heat of the laser from melting excess material, or may be layered so that etching away the surface reveals colored layers below.

Many plastics such as vinyl or silicones simply don’t work with laser engraving and require other methods.

Metals

Standard metals require specific, short-wavelength lasers and therefore don’t work in most laser engravers. However coated metals perform quite well since, rather than vaporizing the metal, the lasers vaporize the coating to reveal the metal underneath. Common examples include painted brass and anodized aluminum.

Stone and Glass

Stone and glass are difficult to engrave with lasers and are often better served by other engraving techniques. However when used successfully, laser engraving creates a distinctive pattern of tiny fractures that produces beautiful and durable pieces. Granite is a particularly successful medium since once it is successfully engraved, its durability means it will last for decades even if used for applications like floor tiles.

Glass is also commonly used with sub-surface laser engravers. These engrave the image under the surface of the glass, often in three dimensions, to create stunning keepsakes that other engraving methods can’t equal.

Other Materials

Laser engraving is often used successfully with leather, producing a burned look that resembles hot branding. Latex rubber is also an effective material and laser engravers are often used to make rubber stamps.

Interested to start your own glass etching service? Well, if you don’t know how… the article below might provide some interesting insights to how to start a laser engraving business.

How To Start A Laser Engraving Business At Home!

Starting a laser engraving business today is a great storefront or work from home business opportunity. You can start with very little investment. Laser systems or laser machines today are simple to learn and use. It doesn’t take long to learn so you can generally start up your business in no time. You can work full time or part time and still build up a valuable and profitable business.

You can create a wide variety of items including engraving pens, wine bottles, laptops, luggage tags, custom plaques and many other items or merchandise. You can engrave on acrylic, wood, rubber, stone, leather, fabric, glass and many other types of materials. You can create laser engraved trophies, keepsakes, plaques, pens, pencils, desk sets, toys, games, cabinets, keychains and much more. You can specialize in a particular item or engrave a wide variety.

Many people operate their lasers out of their homes with phenomenal success. There is usually very little competition and you can specialize in a particular item or choose a wide variety to engrave.

To start up a small laser engraving business it will cost around $10,000 if you purchase a system or you can lease. You’ll need a laser system, computer and graphic software.

If you buy a laser machine or system it can cost about $10,000 for an 18" x 12" work area and uses about 25 watts of laser power. You can also lease or lease to own a system for about $240 a month if you have good credit.

You’ll need a computer using a Windows 2000, XP or Vista operating system. All the versions of 2000 or XP either the home or professional versions, etc., are compatible to use with an Epilog Laser. You probably have this already.

You’ll need graphic software. The Epilog systems are designed to run on most of the Window’s-based graphic software programs including CorelDRAW, AutoCAD and Adobe. The Epilog type of system has a printer driver. This will allow you to print images from any of these programs.

You can start up your business without quitting your current job. You can engrave part-time or on weekends and slowly build up your business. You can eventually build it up into a full-time job. There is so little competition that getting customers should be easy.

Once you decide that you would love to have your own business you’ll either need to lease or purchase the perfect system that will work the best for you. You need to know what the largest size piece or item is that you’ll be working with, what materials you’ll be using, how many items you’ll be doing at a time and what your budget will be.

Get a demonstration of laser engraving and cutting systems so you can decide on the table size and tube wattage that you’ll need to create the projects you think you’ll be working with. This way you’ll be able to find the best engraving and cutting system for you.

Creating an engraving is easy. The laser works like a printer, so a system is very easy to use; you just set the page size to the size of the piece you’re working with, then you import your image and place it on the page where that you want it to engrave. Then you just add the text or any other changes you need to make, and print it to the laser. That’s it.

Getting customers is easy when you concentrate on marketing. You can contact schools, corporations, large and small businesses. You can engrave items for customer giveaways. You may even find a big job that will pay for your laser engraving system.
